My family talked about planning a Northern Michigan road trip for some time. My sister, Jeff, and I had never been to the Upper Peninsula before and my parents had not been in many years. We knew we wanted to spend some time exploring there this summer and so we mapped out a road trip to see some of the sights.
Our trip began in Petoskey, Michigan. We have some family friends that live there who graciously invited us to stay with them for two nights. This is a beautiful part of the state! It’s neighboring town, Harbor Springs, is adorable and a perfect spot to visit during a Michigan Summer.
Guide to Petoskey/Harbor Springs:
Explore Pond Hill Farm: This picturesque farm is a wonderful place to stroll through on a sunny day. Inside the farm are a small cafe, winery, and brewery. On the property are trails to hike, gardens to explore, and a barn filled with friends to pet! The views cannot be missed. This would be a great place for the whole family. Link to Farm here.
Drive on M-119: The views along this road are unbelievable. A strip of the road is called the “tunnel of trees” and I can only imagine that in the fall when the leaves are changing this would be gorgeous! We drove north all the way to the town of Good Hart. It’s possibly the smallest town I have ever seen—as in 4 stores. Check out the general store and Primitive Images. Primitive Images is a home store with a tiny cafe in the back. Have some tea or lemonade and grab a crepe from the Northern Crepes trailer out front.
Shop Downtown Harbor Springs: We explored some very cute stores in the downtown area, our favorite was the outfitter. They have tons of outdoor gear and a huge selection of shoes–I may have added some items to my Christmas list (it’s not too early for that right?)
Shop and Walk the Pier in Petoskey: One of my favorite stores was Cutler’s–every kitchen and home gadget you could ever want. Also, tons of great gifts! Link here. My other favorite was B. Jeweled. B. Jeweled has a ton of cute accessories, dresses, and casual wear, definitely, a shop to check out–link here. The pier in Petoskey provides a gorgeous view and if you are feeling up to it you can take the plunge into Little Traverse Bay—looked a little cold to me though 🙂
Our friends have kayaks and Jeff and I were able to take them out for a spin at dusk one evening, if you are able—do this! The water was like glass and you could see straight to the bottom. Kayak by the point in Harbor Springs, the homes are amazing!
Places to Eat/Drink: We did not go to all of these places due to our limited time there but I found these well-rated restaurants through Yelp and Trip Advisor : Petoskey Brewing Company, Cormack’s Deli, Beards Brewery, Roast & Toast, Palette Bistro, Tom’s Mom’s Cookies, and Stafford’s Pier Restaurant.
